Instructions to submit to JAMA Surgery

Authors of abstracts accepted for the meeting are invited to submit a manuscript to JAMA Surgery, the official publication of the Association of VA Surgeons.  Manuscript submission is optional but encouraged.  All manuscripts to be submitted to JAMA Surgery in association with the AVAS meeting are now required to be reviewed by the ad-hoc Publications Committee prior to submission (instructions above).  Any abstract accepted to the meeting (Quickshot or Full oral) can be submitted to the Publications Committee as either an Original Investigation (i.e.:  full manuscript) or a Research Letter.  Prior to submitting to the Publications Committee, please refer to the instructions for authors on the JAMA Surgery website to ensure correct formatting and that your manuscript is consistent with journal requirements.

As we did this past year, to allow expedited publication, manuscripts from the meeting will be published upon acceptance in JAMA Surgery.

Please adhere to the following instructions:
  • Submit all AVAS manuscript to the AVAS Recorder using the link above to initiate review by the Publications Committee
  • For manuscripts recommended by the Committee to be submitted to JAMA Surgery, submit using the JAMA Surgery Online Manuscript Submission and Review System by midnight, June 23, 2023.
  • Adhere to the “Instructions for Authors” for manuscript guidelines
  • Remember to select, 'AVAS Original Investigation' or 'AVAS Research Letter' when submitting

During manuscript submission:
  • Include on the Title page of the manuscript a footer stating “Accepted for presentation at the 2020 Association of VA Surgeons Annual Meeting”
  • Include the above information in the “Meeting Presentation” field during the submission process.

Upon submission of the manuscript to JAMA Surgery, email the Recorder of the AVAS, Brian Smith, MD at  smithbr@hs.uci.edu, the following information:
  • The JAMA Surgery assigned manuscript number
  • Title of the manuscript
  • Name of first author
  • The name, institution. and email address of three (3) AVAS members who could serve as unbiased reviewers of the manuscript. These members should NOT be contacted, but should have expertise in the manuscript content area to be able to scientifically review the paper.

Please note: Failure to email the AVAS Recorder with the above information will result in review of the manuscript independently of the meeting.

Submission of a manuscript for consideration for publication as part of the AVAS Annual Meeting implies a willingness by the first and/or senior author of the manuscript to review 1-3 other manuscripts for JAMA Surgery in a timely fashion, if requested to do so.  For the peer review process to function well, it is imperative that all first and/or senior authors be willing to participate in the process as reviewers in addition to functioning as authors.
