Chief, Surgical Service, VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLA)
VAGLA seeks a dynamic leader to serve as Chief, Surgical Service. Candidates for this major leadership position must be board certified in a surgical field, have an outstanding record of academic accomplishments with national prominence and have proven leadership skills to attract, motivate, and direct a group of innovative and productive clinicians and researchers. The successful candidate should demonstrate clinical excellence, a commitment to education, and the ability to catalyze the growth of clinical and basic research. Academic credentials should be commensurate with faculty appointment as Professor or Associate Professor at David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
VAGLA provides inpatient and consultation surgical services at the West Los Angeles campus and outpatient services at the Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center, Downtown Los Angeles Ambulatory Care Center campus, and community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) throughout Southern California. The Surgical Service at VAGLA has implemented an expansive Clinical Video Telehealth (CVT) program to serve Veterans in the CBOCs. This unique CVT program incorporates the care of Advance Practice Providers in the CBOCs in collaboration with specialty surgeons in West Los Angeles, allowing Veteran patients to receive optimal, timely access to surgical care within the GLA system.
VAGLA serves as one of the major tertiary referral centers for Veterans from throughout Southern California, extending north to Bakersfield and San Luis Obispo. VAGLA is a complexity level 1a facility and performs the highest number of complex operations in VISN 22 annually. The Surgical Service encompasses general surgery, all surgical specialties, podiatry, and optometry; these disciplines incorporate advanced techniques, such as robotic surgery. Data from the VA Surgical Quality Improvement Program (VASQIP) demonstrate sustained outstanding clinical outcomes and commitment to patient safety and quality.
VAGLA is primarily affiliated with DGSOM at UCLA as well as University of Southern California and other educational and health care institutions throughout the region. As one of the largest training facilities in the nation, VAGLA hosts approximately 2000 trainees annually in medicine, nursing, and the allied health professions. Surgical residents and students from DGSOM at UCLA are integral to the delivery of surgical care and rotate on every surgical specialty. The Surgical Service is home to numerous clinician-investigators with career development awards and merit review awards from a range of funding agencies, including VA, NIH, and the Department of Defense.
