Dr. Joseph F. Amaral is Vice President of surgical science for the medical devices sector of Johnson and Johnson Corporation. In this role he provides scientific leadership for surgical innovation. He co-leads the China innovation center, the Hepatobiliary global strategy as well as forming the new area to JNJ of interventional radiology. Dr. Amaral is internationally known as an innovator, educator and early adopter of novel surgical technologies and techniques. 
 
Prior to joining JNJ, Dr. Amaral was President and CEO of Rhode Island Hospital (RIH) and its pediatric division Hasbro Children’s Hospital from 2000 to 2007 where he led a $60 million dollar financial turnaround.  Prior to that, he was chairman of the department of surgery at Brown Medical School and chief of Surgery at RI Hospital.  He is internationally recognized as a pioneer in laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery and performed approximately 3,000 laparoscopic procedures and trained hundreds of practicing surgeons in these techniques throughout New England, broadly across the U.S., and around the world.  He is most notably known for co-developing the Harmonic Scalpel among other commonly used surgical technologies. He has authored over 100 peer reviewed papers, multiple book chapters and edited one book on surgical energy.
