President's Note...

It’s that busy time of year again. The holidays are rapidly approaching and once again it is time for you to buff up your abstracts and submit them for presentation at the annual AVAS meeting. The abstract deadline is January 8, 2010.

This year’s meeting is in Indianapolis May 8 through the 11th. As an ex-Hoosier, I can assure you that you will be pleasantly surprised with all that Indiana has to offer. Dr. Delores Cikrit, our local arrangement’s chair and Dr. Keith Lilliemoe, chair of the Department of Surgery at Indiana University are putting together a terrific meeting venue. I encourage all of you to plan on joining in on the fun.

Medicine, surgery and the VA are all undergoing tremendous change. The annual meeting of the Association of VA Surgeons is a great way for you to help shape the VA of tomorrow by sharing your ideas and your research work with your colleagues across the country. Dr. David Gunner, director of surgery in VA Central office will be with us and you will be able to learn of the latest and greatest coming from central office. Dr. Seth Spector, our program committee chair is anxiously awaiting your abstract.
This is also a good time of year to encourage your local colleagues to join the Association of VA Surgeons. Please have applications and supporting letters emailed to Dr. Michael Crittenden, our membership chair. Instructions and applications can be found at www.vasurgeons.org.

Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Hanukah, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Hope all of you have a safe and peaceful holiday.

Lillian G. Dawes M.D.
President of AVAS
